Making AI Ads That Don’t Feel Fake
AI isn’t the future of ad creation. It’s the new baseline.
The real question now isn’t whether to use it. It’s how to use it without making your brand feel fake, flat, or forgettable.
So this isn’t a beginner’s guide to AI tools. It’s a guide to using AI without losing the human touch that makes your ads believable — and profitable.
Let’s Talk Tools, Real Quick
Like I said, this isn’t a tutorial on how to use AI tools.
But if you’re wondering what tools people are using to make AI ads, here are the most popular ones right now:
For copy/scriptwriting:
- ChatGPT: Great for brainstorming headlines, angles, or copy variations when you’re stuck.
- Claude: Slightly better than ChatGPT when it comes to longer scripts.
For visuals:
- ChatGPT-4o or Midjourney: Use 4o if you want speed and flexibility; go with Midjourney if you care more about style and detail.
For video:
- Google Veo: Powerful for cinematic-style visuals.
- Arcads: Great for creating UGC-style videos.
The Truth About AI-Generated Ads
AI is great at helping you move fast. But fast doesn’t always mean right.
If you’ve spent any time making ads or paying attention to the smartest voices in the space, you’ll notice the same truths come up again and again:
AI Can’t Replace Humans
AI can streamline the ad creation process. But it still can’t think like a marketer or feel like a customer.
You still need a human to decide what actually works.
Marco Lange tested this across 3 versions of the same ad:
- AI-only script: ROAS 0.8
- AI with light edits: ROAS 1.0
- Human-led script (with AI support): ROAS 2.99
Same product. Same budget. What made the difference? A person who understands ad psychology.
Not Every Ad Should Be Made With AI
The best brands don’t choose between human and AI. They use both to shape their creative strategy.
People for personality & authenticity. AI for volume & scaling.
The trick is knowing which to lean on, and when.
AI shines in certain types of ads and totally misses in others. Next, I’ll break down how to tell the difference.
How To Make AI Ads That Don’t Feel Fake
Static Ads: 9/10
To be honest, I’m pretty blown away by how far AI-generated static ads have come.
It’s not just about cranking out high-quality images — the level of authenticity it can replicate is kind of insane.
Believe it or not, the visuals in the examples below are all made with ChatGPT.

Worth trying:
For ad copy, try feeding ChatGPT your customer reviews. You’ll be surprised how good the results are ;)
Sample prompt:
"Here are some reviews that I would like to use as inspiration for headlines to be used in ad creative on Meta.
I'd like the headlines to be 5 - 10 words long.
Give me 10 headlines you think would drive someone 40+ to buy on Meta Ads
Here are the customer reviews: [Your customer reviews]"
Video Ads: 7/10
Compared to image ads, video is where AI still struggles to feel believable.
Anyone who isn’t a Baby Boomer will catch it through the little things: the slightly off lip sync, the stiff delivery, the soulless eyes.
That said, there are formats where AI actually holds up, and others where it just doesn’t land (yet).
AI Ad Formats That Work
- Greenscreen-style UGC
When the AI face takes up the whole screen, you catch every weird blink and off-sync word. But with this style of ad, the face gets much smaller and those flaws slip right past the viewer’s focus.

- Ads that don’t try to be authentic
I personally don’t think UGC-style is the best use of AI right now.
It’s just too easy to spot. And once people catch it, the trust is gone.
What I’ve seen work better is when you lean into storytelling. That way, you can use AI to make something that clearly doesn’t look authentic, but still scroll-stopping.
Example: This TikTok video went full AI and was estimated to earn $270K+ since launch.

AI Ad Formats That Don’t Land (For Now)
Ads that rely on a human face to carry the message are still out of AI’s league.
The emotion, trust, and nuance have to come from a real face, a real moment.
AI still can’t deliver that. And when it tries, it shows.
Here are a few ad formats where real people still do the heavy lifting.
Bottom line
At the end of the day, the only people making great ads with AI are the ones who already knew how to make great ads without it.
Because AI isn’t a creative shortcut. It’s just a new set of tools, and the results still depend on the person holding them.
